Abstract

Culture shock is the experience of people who live in the new culture. The samples of phenomenon of culture shock is once reflected in The Karate Kid (2010) movie. For the reason, this research has two objectives. First, it is aimed at finding out the causes of culture shock experienced by Dre Parker in The Karate Kid (2010) movie. Second, it is aimed to identify the adjustment stages of culture shock experienced by Dre Parker in The Karate Kid (2010) movie. This research uses a qualitative research approarch. In other side, this research uses cases studies method. Having the collected data, the movie then watches, categorizes some scenes and the dialogues related to the aim of this research, and makes the interpretation. Mostly, this research uses Hofstade’s theory for the causes of cultur shock. Then, this research uses Oberg’s theory for the adjustment stages of culture shock. For the result, this research found 6 scenes in which the dialogues related to the causes of culture shock available. Those are the loss of familiar cues, the immigrant dissatisfied with the new ways, and the breakdown of interpersonal communications. Meanwhile, there are 7 scenes included the dialogues related to the adjustment stages of culture shock experienced by Dre Parker in The Karate Kid (2010) movie. Those are honeymoon stage, aggresive stage, superior stage, and then the complete adjustment stage. The rest of causes and adjustment stages of culture shock mostly shown in the form of action or behaviour of Dre Parker.
