Abstract

The research entitled “Politeness Strategies in Nicholas Sparks’s Novel A Walk to Remember” is conducted to describe and analyze politeness strategies used by Mr. Hegbert and other characters that using positive and negative politeness strategies. People tend to choose the strategies for polite conversation in the purpose of achieving their final goal by maintaining other’s face. Politeness is the power distance relationship of the interactants and the extent to which a speaker imposes on or requires something from their addressee. However, politeness phenomena can also appear in literary text such as dialogues in a novel which provides the language of people interacting each other within the novel through the portrayed characters, so the story is easy to understand. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. The data collection technique is by choosing and reading the data. The data were taken from the utterances of Mr. Hegbert and other characters that used positive and negative politeness strategies in novel. After conducting the research, the researcher conclude that: there are four strategies found in Nicholas Sparks’s Novel A Walk to Remember used by Mr. Hegbert, bald on-record strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record strategy. This research shows that there are hardly any differences in the politeness strategies used by the speakers and types of politeness strategies seem to correspond, although, positive politeness strategies are more frequent than negative politeness strategies, and bald-on-record strategy is the most infrequent of the three.
