Abstract
Literature is a writing that does not merely express what is real. In the literature there are studies that study how a literary work was created. Short stories as one of the literary works of course have intrinsic and extrinsic elements. In this study the authors examine the elements that exist in the literary work is how an author creates a character or often called characterization. In this study, the authors focus on the characterization of mysterious characters in a collection of short mystery stories. The author wants to know 1) What kind of mysterious characters contained in the collection of short mystery stories? and 2) What is the characterization of the mysterious characters? The question will of course be answered with the theory of characterization that Minderop discusses using 3 methods of telling and showing method, point of view and figurative language. The results of this study is the kind of mysterious characters in the collection of short stories is a professional character, gritty character and extraordinary character. Then in characterizing the mysterious figure. The author is more dominant using the method of telling because in all the short stories there are auxiliary characters who always accompany the mysterious character. So that auxiliary character who more characterize the mysterious character.
