Abstract

ENGLISH This research focused on the problem of depression of the main character in a classic novel entitled The Bell Jar written by Sylvia Plath. Esther Greenwood as the main character is a student who struggled to resist problem life, felling tired and hopeless that occur depression. That condition made change herself signed by physic and psychological disorders as the response of problem. The problem is the loss of love object. Disability satisfaction of the wish has influence to the character or behavior in daily life signed by physical and psychological symptoms. The problems of this research are formulated into two problems are what the main character symptoms of depression in The Bell Jar novel and what factor causes depression of the main character in The Bell Jar novel. Then, the writer used Sigmund Freud as a grand theory about psychoanalytic such as id, ego, and super ego, melancholia regarding depression theory. Then, literary criticism as the bridging theory connecting to literary course and theory of depression. In other hand, it is to be constructed theory as standpoint as well as the approach to solve the problems. This research used objective approach by Abrams showed that objective approach is from the text to itself. In other hand it focused the analysis on the text. Others, the research used descriptive qualitative method. By using qualitative data and descriptive method, the analysis of the research will be presented in descriptions. The result of this research on the chapter four, the research showed that depression in the main character caused two factors there are lost person love are Greenwood boyfriend is dishonest, hypocrite and treason and the future factor are Greenwood lost of the wish and hard found a choice of life. All of them appeared the symptoms to the sufferer are physical symptoms and psychological symptoms. The physical symptoms are signed by disturbances of the sleeping, eating, lost concentrating and remembering influenced to the ability of reading and writing, and suicide. Meanwhile, psychological symptoms are designed by silence or empty, crying, lost spirit, fear, angry, and broken heart. Based on the result of he research, it can be drawn on conclusion that this research is on psychoanalysis theory of depression. Disability fulfill of desire such as love person and future caused depression of the main character in The Bell Jar novel. It has been served on the data and interpreted by writer. INDONESIA Dalam penelitian ini fokus menganalisis terhadap keadaan depresi yang dialami oleh tokoh utama dalam novel klasik berjudul The Bell Jar. Esther Greenwood sebagai tokoh utama adalah seorang pelajar yang berjuang untuk melawan permasalahan hidup, merasa lelah dan putus asa sehingga dia mengalami depresi. Keadaan tersebut menimbulkan perubahan dalam dirinya yang ditandai dengan gangguan fisik dan psikologis, sebagai bentuk respon dari masalah tersebut. permasalahan tersbut diantaranya kehilangan objek yang digemari. Ketidakmampuan unutk memenuhi keinginan mempengaruhi terhadap perasaan dan perubahan terhadap karakter atau keperibadian dalam kehiduapan sehari-hari, yang ditandai dengan gejala fisik dan psikologis. Masalah dalam penelitian ini kemudian dirumuskan menjadi dua masalah diantaranya yaitu gejala-gejala depresi yang muncul dalam tokoh utama dalam novel The Bell Jar dan faktor penyebab terjadinya depresi dalam tokoh utama dalam novel The Bell Jar. Kemudian, penulis mengguanakan teori Sigmund Freud sebagai teori dasar mengenai psikoanalisis diantaranya, id, ego, dan super ego, melankolis yang berhubungan dengan depresi. Kemudian kritik sastra sebagai jembatan penghubung teori sastra dan depresi. Dengan kata lian, teori yang menghubungkan antara sastra dan teori depresi sebagai penghubung teori dalam sudut pandang maupun pendekatan untuk menjawab permasalahan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan objektif Abrams menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan obyektif adalah pendekatan yang berasal dari teks ke dalam tex itu sendiri. Dengan kata lain fokus analisis terhadap teks. Selain itu, penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Dengan menggunakan data kualitatif dan metode deskriptif, analisis penelitian akan disajikan secara deskriptif. Hasil penelitian pada bab empat, penelitian tersebut menunjukkan bahwa depresi pada tokoh utama disebabkan oleh dua factor yaitu kehilangan cinta dan masa depan. Kedua factor tersebut menimbulkan munculnya gejala terhadap pendeita yaitu gejala fisik dan psikologis. Gejala fisik yang ditandai dengan gangguang tidur, makan, hilang konsentrasi dan mengingat berpengaruh terhadap kemampuan dalam membaca dan menulis, dan bunuh diri. Sedangkan gangguan pada psikologis adalah merasa kosong atau hampa, menangis, hilang semangat, takut, marah, dan sakit hati. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat ditunjukkan pada hasil akhir yaitu bahwa penelitian ini mengenai psikoanalisis dalam depresi. Ketidakmampuan memenuhi hasrat atau keinginan diantaranya cinta erhadap seseorang dan masa depan menyebabkan depresi pada karakter utama dalam novel The Bell Jar.
