Abstract
In this thesis researcher focus on discussing the comparison of fantasy genre in Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). This research uses genre theory as the main theory. The researcher focused this research on fantasy elements using Gates' theory of fantasy genres. Fantasy genre is a type of fiction containing something impossible, contrary to the laws and nature as people know them and highly imaginative fictional creation which defies the limits of any know reality. This research uses Cawelti's theory of formulas. To find the truth, researcher used a comparative study, with the research question; 1. What are fantasy genre’s fomula in Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). 2. What are the similarities and differences of fantasy genre’s formula in Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). The research method that the writer uses in this study is a comparative descriptive method with a qualitative approach to analyze the data. Comparative research is conducted to compare the similarities and differences between two or more facts. Descriptive research involves describing and interpreting events, conditions or situations of the present. Qualitative research is concerned with the opinions, experiences and feelings of individuals producing subjective data. Data is taken from the films Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). The results of this study are showing that fantasy films in general will have the same formula, as Gates (2006) said that successful fantasy stories incorporate formulas: 1. Internal consistency, 2. Capacity to incite wonder, 3. Vivid settings. Internal consistency means that although fantasy writers have the authority to create something that violates natural law, however, the reader also has the right to insist that what is imagined or made must be explained and operate in accordance with some law or principle, even if it is wrong one was designed by the author (Gates, 2003: 10). These fantasy elements are found in the two Spider-Man films. Once analyzed, it was found that in the latest version of Spider-Man the film added some different formulas to the original film. This is needed to satisfy the audience, because the purpose of popular literature is to satisfy the reader or the audience. And still using some old formulas from original films is also needed so as not to change the core of the story.
