Abstract

Modality is one important semantic category which operates at the sentence level. In everyday communication, duty, obligation, permission, and prohibition are the important elements. Because of that, the writer used modality as a research focus, and chose The Capt Meets the Mighty John Petrucci (Dream Theater) video as the object. In The Capt Meets the Mighty John Petrucci (Dream Theater) video, there found many modalities. Therefore, the writer is interested analyzing the topic about modality with the research question: 1. What types of modality found in The Capt Meets the Mighty John Petrucci (Dream Theater) video? 2. What functions of modality found in The Capt Meets the Mighty John Petrucci (Dream Theater) video? This research used descriptive qualitative method. The main data of this research are words, phrases, sentences, taken from the transcript of The Capt Meets the Mighty John Petrucci (Dream Theater) video. This research can be concluded as follows: there are 79 modalities data in The Capt Meets the Mighty John Petrucci (Dream Theater) video, it is consist of epistemic modality (49 data), and deontic modality (30 data). Meanwhile the function of modality found are referential function (41 data), conative function (10 data), emotive function (21 data), poetic function (2 data), metalingual function (2 data), and phatic function (3 data). The writer suggests the next researcher to analyze same field in semantics for different topic such as deixis, presupposition, aspect, speech act, politeness, etc, on different research object.
