Abstract

English, as one of prominent languages in the world, is constantly changing in its development, particularly in its vocabularies. New words are being introduced much more, and the old ones have been created to name various kinds inventions, to refer to new ideas, to metamorphose, to slang utterance, and to be varied by dialects, all of which enrich the language. Of all the features in the development of English, the most interesting one is the emergence of new words, which subsequently turns to be called neologism. Many cases of neologism have come from popular literature, and they tend to appear in different forms. One of literary works containing the cases of the so-called neologism is a popular novel written by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret. In its Indonesian version, the novel has also been transferred in the aspects of neologism. Considering the interesting and unique translation of neologism which is represented in the narrative of Harry Potter and Chamber of Secret in its Indonesian translation, the researcher feels a necessity to analyse the Indonesian translation of the novel. Neologism, as part of linguistics, has placed itself in the study of translation. The problem of this research is then formulated into two questions: (1) what types of neologism are there in J.K. Rowling`s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret; and (2) how is neologism translated in J.K. Rowling`s Haryy Potter and the Chamber of Secret. Therefore, this research is entitled Neologism in J.K. Rowling`s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret. Considering that this research focuses itself on neologism, theories presented in the second chapter deals with definition of neologism, types of neologism, definition of translation, types of translation, translation process, translation procedures, translation and neologism. All of these theories serve as theoretical foundation for the next chapter, that is, the main section of this graduate paper. The discussion in this chapter indicates as well that the world of neologism has so much to with the field of translation, since every language has its own distinctive features coming from distinctive culture. There are eleven types of neologism based on Newmark`s theory. They are old word with new sense, new coinages, derived word, abbreviation, collocation, eponym, phrasal word, transferred word, acronym pseudo and blends. But, despite eleven types of neologism, there are six types exist in the narrative of J.K. Rowling`s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret. They are old word with new sense, new coinages, derived word, collocation, acronym, and blend. Each of the types has its own cases and major roles in the narrative of J.K. Rowling`s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret. In Indonesian version of the novel, the six types of neologism have properly been translated based on the translator`s perspective. Even so, the translation of each item is proved to be in accordance with Newmark`s theory of translation procedure, that is, spread in continuum transference, naturalization, transposition, functional term, descriptive term, literal translation, footnote/note translation, and couplet. It can thus be concluded that the various types of neologism occupies their function and play great role in enhancing the story itself. The function and role of neologism are getting more significant precisely after the novel has been translated into Indonesian language. In the making of its Indonesian version, the process of translation should not put aside the importance of transferring the neologism into Indonesian sense, since the translation and the text itself, including the cases of neologism within it, are intended to be comprehended by readers.
