Abstract
Pronunciation is one of the basic components of speaking. It is a productive skill because while speaking the speaker should think and pronounce words correctly using appropriate pronunciation. However, pronouncing English words is not easy. To master English, especially pronunciation, students need to do more practices. Listening to English songs is one way that can help them pronounce the words. Therefore, this research focused on the students’ frequency of listening to English songs and their reading English pronunciation. The research was aimed (1) to find out students’ frequency of listening to English songs, (2) to find out the students’ English pronunciation of the vowels, /ʌ /, /æ/, /ә/, and (3) to find out the correlation between students’ frequency of listening to English songs and their English pronunciation of the vowels, /ʌ /, /æ/, /ә/. This research was conducted at the eighth grade of SMPN Satu Atap 1 Batujaya, Karawang involving 37 students. The research used a quantitative correlation study involving questionnaire and test as the data collection technique. The result showed that students’ frequency of listening to English songs was very high seen from the mean score of the questionnaire result that was 107.47 out of 125. Furthermore, students’ pronunciation ability is good seen from the mean score of the test that was 23.76 out of 36. The correlation test showed that the correlation coefficient score is 0.41. It means that there is a fair correlation between students’ frequency of listening to English songs and students’ English pronunciation of the vowels, /ʌ /, /æ/, /ә/. Furthermore, the t-test data shows that t count is 2.66 and t table is 2.03. It means that t count is higher than t table. So, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted which means that there is correlation between the two variables. Based on the results, this research concludes that there was a correlation between students’ frequency of listening to English songs and students’ English pronunciation. The students listen to the lyrics of English songs frequently so that they learn how to pronounce the words well. The frequency of listening to English songs can affect their English pronunciation. The higher their frequency of listening to English songs is, the better their English pronunciation is. Therefore, listening to English songs is necessary for students since it can help them improve their English pronunciation.
