Abstract

Abstract Land degradation defined as a decline in land quality has become a major global issue during the 20th century and remained a priority issue on the international agenda in the 21st century. Soil erosion, water supply, energy crisis, and loss of biodiversity ranked as the prime global environmental problems in line with the increasing human population. Soil erosion is one of the most serious environmental problems which is able to induce land degradation as it diminishes soil quality and reduces the natural productivity of agricultural and forest ecosystems. Soil erosion in sloping farmland (3-30%) in Indonesia ranged from 60-625 t/ha/year. There were sloping land of more than 15%, and also more than 100%, it's cause erosion are very high. Application of soil conservation leads to sustainable agricultural system supported by technology and institutions as well as to improve public welfare and to conserve soil resources and environment. Land has a large potential in supporting human life activities. It can be used as agricultural areas or settlements; however, by the time it changed functionally.
