Abstract

This research analyzes some of Michael Jackson’s song lyrics. He is titled as the King of Pop. The race equality is one of issues that raised up by Michael Jackson in some song lyrics. The statements of problem in this research are: 1.What is race equality found in Michael Jackson’s selected song lyrics? 2. How is race equality expressed in Michael Jackson’s selected song lyrics? The theory used in this research is structuralism which focus on race equality. The result of this research is, from five song lyrics divided into four themes, they are: skin color equation, peace for all human, stands together, and friendship. Song lyric included to skin color equation theme is Black or White. Song lyric included to peace for all human theme is Heal the World. The song lyrics included to stand together theme are: We are the World and People of The World. Song lyric included to the friendship theme is You’ve Got A Friend. Michael Jackson expresses race equality through two ways, they are: 1. Using clear diction to make reader easily understand the theme in song lyrics, such as: Black or White, Heal the World, People of the World and 2. Using figurative languages which lead readers to find faded theme such as: We Are the World and You’ve Got A Friend. The conclusions of this research are: first, it is great to erase discrimination in life. Second, it is time to make the world better by helping each other without seeing the race.
