Abstract
Teaching tenses to students who learn English is not an easy task since many students are learning English tenses. Many students are lack of interest in English tenses. When students comprehend tenses properly, they are able to master tenses correctly. Therefore, in order to master tenses, a teacher should have alternative techniques. One of them is QTM Technique. The purpose of this research is (1) to find out the students’ ability in mastering tenses by using QTM Technique, (2) to find out the students’ ability in mastering tenses using lecturing Technique, and (3) to find out the effectiveness QTM technique to teaching English tenses. The researcher used a quantitative method by dividing the class into two parts; (1) experimental class, in which the students were taught by using QTM technique and 2) control class, in which the students were taught by using Lecturing technique. The study was conducted in several steps by using the experimental research as the design of study. The steps which occurred were setting establishing, procedure measuring, sampling and data analyzing. The population was taken from the second grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Bandung. The total sample was 70 students drawn XI A as the experimental class and XI B as the control class. The result of analysis for students’ ability in mastering tenses can be shown that the mean score of pre–test and post-test experimental class is from 67.57 to 83.43 and the mean score of pre-test and post-test in control class is from 66.14 to 72.00. It means that the students’ ability in mastering tenses in experimental class is better than students’ ability in mastering tenses in control class. On the other hand, those were taught by QTM technique have higher score than those were taught by lecturing technique. Moreover, the statistical analysis of t-test shows that ttable is on significance 5% and df = 68 is 1.99, while tcount is 6.97. It means that tcount > ttable. It can be concluded that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. In other word, there is significance difference between students’ who are taught using and not using QTM Technique in their English Tenses. So, the using QTM Technique is effective to improve students’ English Tenses. Based on the result of the data above, it can be concluded that the use of QTM technique in students’ ability in mastering tenses is effective because there is a significant improvement in students’ ability in mastering tenses.
