Abstract

This study is a Critical Discourse Analysis of The News about Rohingya in CNN.com. Ten articles of the news about Rohingya were selected from topic about the news relates to the clash between Arakanese Buddhist and Rohingya. In order to represents the ideology that lies behind the news which is examined by transitivity and represents the power in the news which is examined by first paragraph, direct speech, and modality. The analysis started with the selected sentence analyze the ideology and modality. Last, the selected paragraph analyze the first paragraph and direct speech. The results showed that critical discourse analysis could identify the ideology behind the news through transitivity, identify the power through first paragraph, direct speech and modality. As a result, the ideology in the CNN.com about Rohingya reveals that there are victims from the clash between Arakanese Buddhist and Rohingya. Another result, the representation of power in CNN.com about Rohingya is Human Right Group who persuade the people in the world to pay attention to Rohingya.
