Abstract

This research takes movie script as the object. The clauses were gained from 300 movie that was produced by Mark Canton and written by Zack Snyder in 2006. It contains hundreds of clauses but the researcher restricts only to utterances of Leonidas that contain mental process. It becomes the source of data for the analysis. The research problems are: 1. What kinds of mental process are used by Leonidas in his utterances in 300 movie script? 2. What are the frequency of mental process out of total processes in his utterances in 300 movie script and what does it indicate? This research aims to investigate the kinds of mental process and to find out the frequency of mental process out of total processes in his utterances. Theory which is used is systemic functional linguistics pioneered by M.A.K Halliday. Transitivity system is used to analyze the text in this research. Mental process and its types become the focus in analyzing the clauses as data. The method of this research is qualitative method. It does not contain any number from the result of data. The researcher uses words to give the description of data. The result of this research consists of 46 data which are divided into four types of mental process in order to answer the first research question. The first type is cognitive mental process that has 21 data or 45,6% proportion in the analysis. The second one is emotive mental process that has 12 data or 26,1% proportion in the analysis. The third one is perceptive mental process that has 7 data or 15,2% proportion in the analysis. The last one is desiderative mental process that has 6 data or 13,1% proportion in the analysis.
