Abstract

This research analyzes the symbols in character and the illusion of reality in The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. Play of The Glass Menagerie uses a lot of symbols. These symbols are used to describe every character and situation in the play. Besides symbols, this play also has the illusion of reality. In this research, the researcher used the Triadic Peirce theory. Peirce divides three stages to analyze signs including representament, object and interpretant. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative methods because the results of this research are words which are then described. In addition, researcher used a structural approach. In analyzing data, researcher used scripts from the play script The Glass Menagerie, then the researcher took dialogues that were suspected of being symbols. After that, it is connected using the Triadic Peirce theory. The symbols obtained are taken from three characters including Laura, Tom and Amanda. The symbol for Laura is the glass menagerie, unicorn, souvenir, blue roses, fire escape and paradise dance hall. The symbols for Tom are Wingfield apartmen, cigarrate, fire escape, the movie, magican, and hello good bye. While the symbol for Amanda is the blue mountain and gentleman callers. The researcher connects the symbols that have been found into the illusion of reality and finds illusion of reality such as glass menagerie, unicorn, blue roses, paradise, souvenirs and blue mountain.
