Abstract

Reading comprehension in a foreign language is still a big problem for many students in high school. There are a lot of student still get difficulties in understanding it as proven by their English examination result is low. Reading difficulties are probably caused by factors such as students' knowledge of the language. In this case is the technique of speed reading such as skimming and scanning are potential to be used to read effectively and efficiently. In keeping with the real problem above, this research aims to know the effectiveness of using skimming in reading Republika articles. The research purposes are to find out (1) learners’ ability to find main ideas before using skimming technique in reading Republika articles, (2) learners’ ability to find main ideas after using skimming technique in reading Republika articles, (3) The significant difference between learners’ ability in reading Republika articles before and after using skimming technique. Quantitative approach was employed in this research, specifically the pre-experimental method because this research uses a single group as the sample. The pre-experimental method was implemented in three parts: pretest, treatments and posttest. There were 281 students who are the total population, and 28 students were selected as the research samples. The samples were taught by using skimming in reading Republika articles in the learning process. Pretest and posttest were conducted to collect the data. It was aimed at finding the significant improvement of learners’ ability in reading Republika articles before and after using skimming technique. The result of data analysis for students’ vocabulary improvement could be seen from average score. The mean score of posttest 81, 60 is higher than the pretest 56, 07. The statistical data result shows that t count (27.21) > t table (1.35). It means that H0 is rejected. In other hand, there is a significant improvement in learners' ability after using skimming technique.
