Abstract

In the world of literature, there are three literary genres, one of them is poetry. In the poem, symbolism is one of the writing aspects to convey an idea or a certain concept. This paper, has utilized the semiotics study. Semiotics analyzes the aspects of sign and everything connected to it. One of the aspects of semiotics is symbol. The poems that have been analyzed in this paper are John Milton's poems by the study of semiotics. There are opinions and theories that analyze the symbol, but this paper takes Charles Sanders Pierce's theory. This research is thus intended to know the kinds of symbol used by John Milton to represent love in his poems and to describe the relationship between representament, object, interpretant, and the symbols of love in John Milton's poems through Pierce's theory. By means of Pierce's theory will be seen how those symbols formed. In John Milton's poems, there exist what Pierce sees as triadic relation in semiotics. Such word as "chariot, "jarr", earth", and many others. For example, the word "chariot" in The Passion in the Qualisign level, it can be interpreted in many different meanings, because its representament is formed by the quality or color. It is not called as symbol yet, because in the Qualisign level, it is as same as the chariot in generally. When it is placed in Sinsign level, it can be called as a symbol, because it has represented something and has the certain meaning, because in this level, it is placed in the certain concept or in the real fact. Then, when it shows something and conveyed conventionally by the society who used that sign, so it is placed in the Legisign level. The symbols of love and their meaning in John Milton's Poems do indeed exist. John Milton uses symbols that connect with his adore to His God. Here exists as well the relationship between representament, object, interpretant, and the symbols of love in John Milton's Poems through Pierce's theory. Such the explaining above is considered as the conclusion of the paper. Then it is suggested for everybody who wants to analyze the semiotics study to read and discuss more, because in this country there are still limited numbers of qualified people in this field.
