Abstract

This research takes two online news reports as the object. The two online news reports were gained from BBC and Al Jazeera official websites that reported bombing attacks in Surabaya, dated May 13, 2018. The two online news reports have different perspective, power, ideology and language use that construct in a text. Then, it becomes the data for the analysis. The research problems are: 1). What are discourse structures (in terms of language use) utilized by both online news reports of BBC and Al Jazeera in relation to the bombing attacks in Surabaya? 2). What are the representations of power and ideology as it is indicated in discourse structures in two online news reports?. This research aims to investigate discourse structures of BBC and Al Jazeera online news reports and to find out the representations of power and ideology that implied in two online news reports. The theory which is used in this research is discourse structures of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) coined by Van Dijk (2001). Discourse structures are used to analyze power and ideology which is covered in a text. Discourse structures have five steps of analysis. There are semantics macrostructures (topics), local meanings, the subtle formal structures, context models and event models. The results of this study indicate that the utilization of discourse structures in both online news reports lead to put Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an Islamic extremist group, as the terrorists and the main actor who are fully blamed. Then, the representations of power and ideology are reflected in local meaning analysis, transitivity processes analysis, active-passive voice analysis, context models analysis and event models analysis. BBC power and ideology is to blame JAD as the main actor. Moreover, from the analysis of context models, BBC is considered as being more careful in reporting and using the word "terrorist". In the same way, Al Jazeera uses power and ideology to blame JAD, because Al Jazeera supports Ikhwanul Muslimin, a group that has different ideology with JAD.
