Abstract

This research explicates the explore of powerful and persuasive aspect in Zakir Naik’s statement in Indonesia, the study of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL)’s Experiential Metafunction. The types of Experiential Metafunction includes Material, Verbal, Mental, Behavioural, Existential, and Relational. Therefore, the problem of the research are: 1) The types of experiential metafunctional Processes found in Zakir Naik’s statements during in Indonesia, 2) The types of experiential metafunctional processes enact powerful aspect in Naik’s statements, 3) The types of experiential metafunctional processes enact persuasive aspect in Naik’s statement. In this research, the types of experiential metafunctional processes are used by Material in finding human activity which involved as bodily, physically, and materially, then Verbal process in finding the processes involved human speech, Mental process which contains of Cognitive, Affective and Perceptive, then Behavioural process which is classified human behaviour, and Relational process which consists of Attributive and Identifying Relational process. After that, as the study of SFL, Halliday also defines the relation amongst Material process which produces the power and Relational process which produces the persuasive aspect. Moreover, the study apply Qualitative in explaining the words than number and content analysis which apply the percentage to prove the tendency of the process type. The data in this research is based on five video scripts in Zakir Naik’s statement in Indonesia (2016). The statements that are found then divide into clauses. Hence, the result in this study shows that the dominant tendency in this research is Relational process, and Material process is placed in the third sum of the five video’s scripts. Therefore, the powerful aspect does not have the great influence using by Naik as the speaker and Persuasive aspect is the dominant level toward the whole of video’s script. The finding proved that Naik is not a leader who search the authority through the power, he is an Islamic preacher who persuade and achieve others toward his teaching and explanation.
