Abstract
This research paper attempts to answer two research questions, they are: 1) What kinds of figurative language that are used in the dialogues of the novel entitled Eldest by Christopher Paolini?, and 2) What kinds of translation methods are used in translating figurative language in dialogues in Christopher Paolini novel’s Eldest ?. In order to solve those problems, this research used two main theories; they are figurative language and translation method theories, i.e. word-for-word, idiomatic, faithful, literal, communicative, free, semantic, adaptation translation methods In conducting the research, descriptive qualitative method was applied to analyze all the selected data in order to classify and explain them. In the novel, It was found that thirteen out of sixteen types of figurative language in dialogues of Eragon, Saphira, and Roran as data. Those fourteen types of figurative language dialogues found in the novel are: Idiom, Personification, Simile, Onomatopoeia, Synecdoche, Hyperbole, Metaphor, Paradox, Metonymy, Alliteration, Irony, Imagery, and Symbol. In addition, this research also analyzed the methods that were used by the translator in translating figurative language. Then, those six methods found in the novel Eldest; they are: Communicative, Literal, Free, Wordfor-word, Idiomatic, and Faithful translation method. This research expects that this paper has being meaningful to anyone who needs to enrich his or her knowledge on translation studies, particularly on the research of figurative language in translation methods.
