Abstract

ENGLISH This thesis focuses to investigate the motivation that causes a woman conducts the hiking alone and the achievement she gets through her hiking in the memoir book entitled Wild by Cheryl Strayed. Strayed decides to hike alone more than thousands of miles on the Pacific Crest Trail even though she has never hiked before. Strayed is a woman who has several problems in her life. Starting from the death of her mother which then ensued her life to self-destruct until decided to hike alone. The problem of statements in this research are 1) The motives of Cheryl Strayed hiking to the wild, 2) The achievement of Cheryl Strayed‘s hiking. This research was analyzed using humanistic psychology of Abraham Maslow which deals with the hierarchy of needs theory to analyze the motive of Strayed‘s hiking and self-actualization theory to analyze the achievement of Strayed‘s hiking. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data of this research are words and sentences related to the motive and achievement of Strayed‘s hike. The research were conducted by applied the theory, decribed the quotation, analyzed the data, and made coclusions. The result of this research shows that the wrong manners in fulfilling the safety need caused Strayed lacks of self-esteem. The needs for self esteem to be fulfilled again in different way motivate Strayed to hike. Through her hiking Strayed can achieve self-actualization by fulfilling her basic needs and also has the characteristics of self-actualized person as has peak exeriences, detachment, creativity, acceptance of self and others. Theoretically, the writer suggests the next researcher to analyze the other problem of the memoir especially in psychological symptom or this research can be used as reference to analyzed the motive inside someone‘s behavior through humanistic psychology Abraham Maslow. Practically, this research can be the reference in understanding the memoir book and application of psychological analysis. INDONESIA Fokus penelitian ini adalah menyelidiki dorongan yang menyebabkan seorang wanita melakukan pendakian seorang diri dan pencapaian yang didapat selama pendakian dalam buku memoar berjudul Wild karangan Cheryl Strayed. Strayed memutuskan untuk melakukan pendakian seorang diri lebih dari ribuan mil di Pacific Crest Trail walaupun dia belum pernah punya pengalaman dalam pendakian. Strayed adalah seorang wanita yang mengalami berbagai masalah dalam hidupnya. Dimulai dari kematian ibunya yang kemudian menjerumuskan dirinya pada pengrusakan diri hingga memutuskan untuk mendaki seorang diri. Rumusan masalah penelitian ini adalah 1) motif pendakian Strayed ke alam liar, 2) pencapaian dari pendakian Strayed. Penelitian ini dianalisis menggunakan teori psikologi humanistik Abraham Maslow yaitu teori hirarki kebutuhan untuk menganalisis motif pendakian dan teori aktualisasi diri untuk menganalisis pencapaian dari pendakian. Metode yang digunakan dalam penilitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah berupa kata dan kalimat yang berhubungan dengan motif dan pencapaian pendakian Strayed. Penelitian dilakukan dengan mengaplikasikan teori, penguraian kutipan, analisis data, dan membuat kesimpulan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa cara pemenuhan kebutuhan akan keamanan yang tidak baik mengakibatkan Strayed kurang akan penghargaan diri. Kebutuhan untuk memenuhi penghargaan diri dengan cara yang berbeda memotivasi Strayed untuk mendaki. Melalui pendakiannya tersebut Strayed mampu mencapai aktualisasi diri dengan memenuhi kebutuhan dasarnya juga memiliki pengalaman puncak, kebutuhan privasi, kreatifitas, penerimaan atas diri sendiri dan orang lain. Secara teoritis, penulis menyarankan peneliti selanjutnya untuk menganalisis masalah lain dalam memoar ini terutama dalam hal gejala psikologis atau peneliatian ini pun dapat digunakan sebagai referensi untuk menganalisis motif tindakan seseorang dilihat dari perspektif psikologi humanistik Abraham Maslow. Secara praktis, penelitian ini dapat digunakan sebagai referensi untuk memahami buku memoar dan pengaplikasian analisis psikologis.
