Abstract

Translation has given many contributions to language, especially, the contribution appears in Madagascar; Escape 2 Africa Film which consist a hundred phrasal verbs in it. Phrasal verb is the combinations of verb followed by a preposition or an adverb and ussualy have a meaning of their own. Based on the problem above, the writer would discuss about “Phrasal Verbs Translation In A Film Entitled Madagascar; Escape 2 Africa”, which formulated in the statement problems: what types of phrasal verbs are found in the film entitled Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, what kinds of translation strategies are used in translating the phrasal verbs in the film entitled Madagascar:Escape 2 Africa. The study was aimed know the types of phrasal verbs found in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa Film and to investigate the translation strategies applied in translating those phrasal verbs. The descriptive qualitative method was applied in conducting this research. The data were collected by downloading the English film subtitles from the internet and transcribing the indonesian film subtitles alreadly provided in the DVD into text. Then, the data were analyzed through several steps. First, all the phrasal verbs found in a film entitled madagascar: escape 2 africa were collected and categorized into the contructions of phrasal verbs proposed by Brown (2000), namely ; (1) transitive-separable, (2) transitive-inseparable, and (3) intransitiveinseparable phrasal verbs. Then the writer analyzed the translation of those phrasal verbs in terms of the translation strategies suggested by Baker (2001). There were three types of phrasal verbs found in a film entitled Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. There were 70 items of 109 phrasal verbs categorized as this type. The other types found were transitive-inseparable phrasal verbs 25 items and transitive-separable phrasal verbs 14 items. Furthermore, there were three strategies used in translating those phrasal verbs. They were translation by paraphrase 101 items, omission 7 items, and using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form 1 item. In conclusion, this study revealed that intransitive-inseparable phrasal verb was the most frequent types of phrasal verbs found in a film entitled madagascar: escape 2 africa. The writer also found that paraphrase is the most frequent strategy which was used in that film. The suggestions are given to the reader especially a translator to master both of the source language and the target language as well as the strategies of translation and also to be careful in translating phrasal verbs.
