Abstract
In a lyric, the authors are free to express their imagination to make a representation of life in their works. But, the symbol have to be representated in line with the symbol made by the author. The representation as symbol, especially the symbol of love, has a branch of science that describes how something can have meaning. This research analyzed the symbol of love in eight lyrics of the Ella Fitzgerald’s song album “Sunshine of Your” used Roland Barthes’s theory of semiotics in literary works. This research focuses on 2 things, which are: (1) what words represent the symbol of love in Fitzgerald’s song lyrics, and (2) denotative and connotative meanings of symbolic words found in Fitzgerald’s song lyrics. This research is designed as literary criticism and conducted in an objective criticism as the qualitative method. The research data consist of 46 data. The research does use the semiotic theory by Roland Barthes and some supporting theories such a thing as the symbol and love theories by Saussures, Pierce, Frye and Eric Fromm. Based the explanation of the love symbol that becomes the words of love as a representation of life. In Ella Fitzgerald’s song lyric, the word of love as a symbol found in Ella Fitzgerald’s 8 song titles on “Sunshine of Your Love” as a love symbol about heart in “Hey Jude!”, “Whatch What Happens”, “Give Me the Simple Life”, “Sunshine of Your Love”. Symbol of love is a for of real-life as representation of illustrated in Ella Fitzgerald’s song lyric which is symbolized as a message of loving by affectionate, kisses, hugs, and sacrifices.
