Abstract
Character is one of an important aspect in literary works. It is an object in a story. He/she is the one who is narrated by the story and making a conflict in it. It can be said that the character seems to be a story maker in a story. A reader might identify character they recognize as being ‘just like me’. And sometimes we talk about a certain character as though she was real people justifying whether we like her or not. The people who read Mrs. PiggleWiggle’s Magic novel shall have different perspective about Mrs. PiggleWiggle character. Based on the background above, this study focused on two problems. The first is to investigate the responses of readers about their perspectives on Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s character in MacDonald’s novel, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle’s Magic. The second is to know the types of response that found in readers’ response. The writer used descriptive method. Descriptive method is a method used to explain, analyze and classify something through various techniques. The data resources in this research are fifteen teachers of Gagas Ceria kinder garden school. The writer used basic analytical concept of qualitative data. There are four steps in it, i.e arranging, organizing, coding, categorizing and grouping. Firstly, the writer fractured the data. Secondly, the writer made a categorizing and grouping to the data. The last, the writer made an explanation and interpretation to all the data that the writer found. The writer used reader response theory and literary review of character in analyzing the first statement of problem. Meanwhile, Hancock categorization of types of response is used in answering the second statement of problem. Based on data analysis, the writer found that from readers’ perspective on Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s character, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s character is the main character in the novel. Besides, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is flat character and it is not change until the end of the story, hence she called as static character. There are many moral messages that can be taken from Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s character and all of the respondents like Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s character. From all nine types of response categories, there are five types that found in readers’ responses. They are Character Assessment, Story Involvement, Reader/Writer Digression, Character Identification and Understanding. It found that Character Assessment type is the highest type that found in readers’ written response. The types of responses that not seen in readers’ written responses are: Character introspection, predicting events, Questioning, and literary Evaluation.
