Abstract

Globalization that happens nowadays might bring Indonesian society to forget education of its national character, and this is dangerous to the original character of young generations of Indonesia. That is why this is important to choose the textbook that consists of Indonesian character education. This study is intended to analyze a character education in an English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris” created by the Ministry of Education, and how the teacher at Senior High School integrates the character education to the students. Then this study is written to achieve the objectives: 1) To analyze the character education value represented in the sentence(s) of 2013 curriculum English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris” for the tenth grade of senior high school; 2) To find out how the teacher integrates the “Bahasa Inggris” textbook’s character education value into the student. A qualitative study was applied in this study, particularly a case study. The participant is the teacher in Karya Budi Senior High School. To obtain the data, document analysis, observation and interview were used. The document analysis was conducted to “Bahasa Inggris” textbook using the 18 theory of character education by the Ministry of Education. Moreover, the Observation and Interview were conducted to know how the teacher integrate the character education to the students. The observation data were according to the activity in the classroom. Furthermore, the interview data were conducted using open-ended questions according to integrating theory by the Ministry of education and analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method. The finding shows that after analyzing chapter 3 in “Bahasa Inggris” textbook, there are 5-character education appears, which are; curiosity, creative, communicative, independent, and responsibility which appears implicitly. Moreover, after conducted the observation and interview in Karya Budi Senior High School, the teacher is also integrated 5-character education in 5 sections, which are; warmer, vocabulary builder, conversation, task 2, and reflection. In conclusion, the appearances of the character education in “Bahasa Inggris” textbook is based on its section in the textbook, while the appearances of the character education in Senior High School from the observation and the interview are based on how the teacher integrated them. Finally, after doing the analysis, it can be seen that the result of this textbook is appropriate to be used as a guidebook for the curriculum 2013 teaching and learning.
