Abstract
Novel Dracula is a kind of gothic fiction. Traditionally, a gothic fiction includes elements such as evil, but every character is not only evil but also good too. A character has ethics and different human’s attitude just like “good and evil” character. Simply, ethics is human attitude in connection with moral that is based on the free decision. A character is one of important elements in the novel. It is one of elements that the author presents in his work. This research concentrated to analyze the novel as one of prose discourse in literary works. The object that has been chosen in this research is Bram Stoker’s novel titled Dracula. The problem analyzed in this research concerned to identify and interpret the characters of good and evil in the novel through a process constructed by the relevant theory. Based on the background of problem above, the research was focused on two main problems: (1) how are the good characters represented in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula? And (2) how are the evil characters represented in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula? The purpose of this research is answering the question of the statement of problem above such as: to find out the representation of good characters and evil characters in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. In analyzing the subject of the materials, this research used the descriptive analysis method. The descriptive analysis method means to describe and analyze. It is not only to describe and analyze but also to give understanding and explanation. Moreover, the researcher used the technique of collecting data by using library research, and the steps of data analysis included 1) identifying 2) classifying 3) conclusion. In answering the two problems, the researcher used character and characterization theory, and ethics theory. The result of this research was that there were the forms of good and evil which were representations of good and evil characters in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula those were divided in three forms: the first, characters were major and minor character. The second, characterization included description of physic, what other character say, and conversation. The third, ethics includes attitude were good purpose also good way to achieve it, good purpose but it is not good way to achieve it, purpose is not good way but how to achieve it is good, and the last good purpose but how to achieve it is not good.
