Abstract

Conversation as human behaviour happens when there are two or more participants who are discussing something. In a conversation, the turn to talk has a basic structure that only one participant can talk at a time then another as Levinson (1983:296) stated that conversation is characterized by turn taking, that is: one participant, A, talks, stops; another, B, starts, talks, stops and so we obtain as A-B-A-B-A-B distribution of across two participants. In conversation analysis there is phenomenom that turn of talk. Turn-taking or turn of talk it self is interested to analysis moreover in interview TV program. The speaker commonly have system and strategy to asking or answer of the question. This study is foccus on finding out (1) What turn-taking systems are used by the participants in interview TV program of Catatan Najwa?, (2) What turn-taking strategies are used by the participants in interview TV program of Catatan Najwa?. For this research, the theory purpose by Sack (1974), Liddicoat (2007), Stentroom (1994). This study use conversation analysis method. It contain Choosing, Classifying, Separating the data, Matching the data, Describing and Concluding from the data result. The conversation analysis use to describe the data from a video and the transcript of interview TV program. The research focused to describe about system and strategy of turn-taking in the interview TV program. The program is host by Najwa Shihab with the guest is David Beckham. The research have finish with result show that they are three system turn-taking and three strategies turn taking in the conversation. They are 15(fifteen) data consist of Turn Constructional Unit and 10(ten) data in Transition Relevance Place and 1(one) data in Next Speaker Self-select and then, 1(one) data to Starting Up, also 2(two) data to Interuption and the last 1(one) data in Holding the floor. The turn-taking system is to get goal of conversation and if turn-taking strategy is to get great conversation.
