Abstract

This research tries to analyze the transformation of text into a movie which resulted in change of each elements. The aim of this research is to investigate and identify the transformation of Noah’s character and its relation to White Supremacy between Biblical traditions and Noah’s movie. This research focused on two points: the transformation of Noah’s character and the relationship between transformation of Noah in movie with white supremacy. Noah’s movie takes the adaptation of “the Flood of Noah” from Biblical traditions but appears with audio-visual image. The description of Noah in Biblical tradition is firstly narrated as narrative text. However, the description of Noah in the movie is much shown by visual appearance. This issue makes the transformation of character and characterization through the process of elimination, addition, and varied changes. Researcher uses screen adaptation: transmediation and media representation by Ellestrom (2014) to analyze these points. The last point uses the theory and conception of white supremacy by Frederickson (1981) to analyze the visualization of Noah that represented white supremacist ideology and behavior. The results are: (1) when the texts in the Biblical traditions turn into a movie, transformation of character and characterization occurred. In the Biblical tradition always use direct characterization through God as omniscient narrator. In the movie always use indirect characterization through visual appearance, action, and speech. (2) Visualization of characters in films has a relationship with white supremacy due to the white supremacist ideology based on Christian interpretation of the Holy Bible.
