Abstract

This thesis was aimed at showing how the Orientalism linked to colonialism issue as represented in the Avatar movie script. This movie script was written by James Cameron who was also being the director for the film. The Avatar movie script was studied by using the critical theory of Orientalism by Edward W. Said. This research used a qualitative method. The problem of this research was about how Orientalism discource linked to colonialism as the Sky people learn the Na’vi by using the Avatar program. From the data analysis, the result confirmed that Orientalism was linked to colonialism as represented in the Avatar movie script. The West was depicted by the Sky people while the East was depicted by the Na’vi people. The West was depicted as the superior and a subject who has placed the Na'vi people as the object of their study. Pandora land which depicted as the Eastern world was an exotic land with various unique flora and fauna that contains a valuable mineral called unobtanium. Thus, the RDA (Resources Development Administration) as a powerful mining company was looking for high-priced unobtanium in Pandora. This thesis found that the RDA who learned the Na' vi through the Avatar program lead to conquer the land. By using the Avatar program, they got many information in order to authorize the land and exploit natural resources. It obviously showed the representation of European expansion towards the Eastern world.
