Abstract

Politeness is a great virtue. A person who behaves politely towards others is not only respected but also loved. Politeness towards others means that people are civilised and cultured. A polite person will please others by their polite behavior and good manners. Hence, the researcher was interested to analyze the politeness with research questions: 1. What maxims of politeness are used in the Andini’s vlogs? 2. How does pragmatics scale measure the maxims of politeness in the Andini’s vlogs? The research used qualitative research for describing and analyzing politeness maxims and pragmatics scales in Andini’s vlogs. In this research, the researcher used Leech’s theory for finding the types of politeness maxims and how the scales politeness maxim used by the speakers and the hearers in Andini’s vlogs. The result of data analysis showed that there were six types of politeness maxims in Andini’s vlogs. The most found one was approbation maxim (35,7%), because the speakers avoided conflicting and created comfortable in communication. Meanwhile, the lowest found one was modesty maxim (4,7%) because the speakers preferred to give praise to the hearers than dispraise themselves. Besides, there were five types of pragmatics scales. The most found one was cost-benefit scale (56,3%) as the speakers concerned more giving benefit to the hearers. Meanwhile, the lowest found one was optionality scale (1,8%) as the speakers did not give an option to the hearers to choose the response.
