Abstract

INDONESIA : Karakter adalah salah satu syarat penting dalam novel. Karakter merupakan representasi seseorang dalam sebuah narasi atau dramatis karya seni seperti novel, drama, atau film. Ada dua jenis karakter, flat dan round karakter. Flat karakter adalah arakter statis yang tidak berubah dari awal sampai akhir permainan. Round karakter sebaliknya dari flat karakter, round karakter dinamis dan berkembang dalam sebuah cerita. Rumusan masalah penelitian ini adalah 1) perubahan karakterisasi Okonkwo, 2) fungsi aktan dari setiap karakter yang mempengaruhi perubahan karakterisasi Okonkwo. Data penelitian ini dianalisis menggunakan teori strukturalisme A.J Greimas. Teori tersebut berbicara tentang fungsi aktan dari setiap karakter dalam cerita yang kemudian hasilnya adalah proses detail pencapaian karakter. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari unit analisis dan sumber lain. Skripsi ini menggunakan metode stuktural. Data yang dikumpulkan dari membaca novel Things Fall Apart berulang kali. Sementara itu data juga dianalisis oleh tahap berikut: mengelompokkan, menggambarkan, menganalisis, manfsirkan dan menyimpulkan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan perubahan karakter Okonkwo sebagai tokoh utama dalam novel. Dalam cerita, sebelum Okonkwo di pengasingan ia adalah seorang pria dengan beberapa karakterisasi ambisius, kuat, kasar dan kerja keras. Setelah Okonkwo di pengasingan beberapa karakterisasi berubah menjadi tidak berambisi, tak berdaya,, halus, kerja keras. Fungsi aktan dari masing-masing karakter yang mempengaruhi perubahan karakterisasi Okonkwo adalah Okonkwo dan Ezeudu sebagai pengirim, Okonkwo sebagai subjek, Ekwefi, Ikemefuna, Nwoye, Enzima, Obirieka, Nwakibie sebagai penolong, Nwoye sebagai lawan, Okonkwo sebagai penerima, dan kesuksesan sebagai objek. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa setiap karakter dalam novel Things Fall Apart memepengaruhi perubahan karakterisasi tokoh utama. Berdasarkan teori strukturalisme A.J Greimas, masing-masing karakter dalam cerita dan novel memiliki fungsi yang saling mempengaruhi dengan satu sama lain seperti subjek, objek, pengirim, pembantu, lawan, dan penerima. ENGLISH : Character is one of significant terms in novel. A character is the representation of a person in a narrative or dramatic work of art such as a novel, play, or film. There are two types of characters, flat and round character. Flat characters are static characters who do not change from the beginning to the end of the play. Round characters in contrast to the flat characters, are dynamic and they grow and develop with the play. The problem of this research are 1) The changing characterization of Okonkwo, 2) Actantial function of each character that influence changing characterization of Okonkwo. The data of this research are analyzed using structuralism theory by A.J Greimas. The theory is about the actant function of each character at the story which afterwards the result is the detail process of character’s attaintment. The data of this research were collected from the unit analysis and the other sources. This thesis using structural methods. Data are gathered from reading the novel Things Fall Apart repeatedly. Meawhile the data also analyzed by the following stage: classify, describe, analyze, interpret, and conclude. The result of the study shows that the changes characterization within Okonkwo as the main character in the novel. In the story before Okonkwo in exile he was a man with some characterization ambitious, powerful, rough, hardwork. After Okonkwo in exile some of Okonkwo’s characterization change into Unambitious, powerless, smooth, hardwork. The actantial function of each character that influence the changing characterization of Okonkwo is Okonkwo and Ezeudu as sender, Okonkwo as subject, Ekwefi, Ikemefuna, Nwoye, Enzima, Obierika, Nwakibie as helper, Nwoye as opponent, Okonkwo as receiver, and success as object. It can be concluded that each character in the novel Things Fall Apart influence the major character to change his characterization. Based on structuralism theory by A.J Greimas, each character at story and novel has functions that interplay with each other such as subject, object, sender, helper, opponent, and receiver.
