Abstract

Writing is one of language skills that should be taught besides the other skills. Based on the curriculum of Junior High School recommended by the government, there are some texts which have to be mastered by the students at Junior High School. One of the texts is descriptive text. Descriptive text writing can be mastered with the effective learning process by various strategies, methods or techniques. One of a technique is picture guessing games that are considered suitable to improve students’ descriptive text writing. This paper is written to achieve the objectives: 1) to find out the students’ ability in descriptive text writing by using picture-guessing games technique, 2) to find out the students’ ability in descriptive text writing by using lecturing teaching technique, and 3) to find out the difference of students using picture guessing games technique and using lecturing teaching technique to improve students’ ability in descriptive text writing at second grade of Junior High School of 2 Cilengkrang Bandung. The method used in this research is a quantitative method in the form of experimental design. The total number of population was 221 students of the second grade at Junior High School of 2 Cilengkrang Bandung in the academic year of 2015/2016. Two classes were taken as sample; class VIII-A as the sample of experimental class consisting of 34 students and class VIII-B as the control class consisting of 33 students, and these classes was chosen by random sampling. The instruments used in this research were descriptive text writing of pre-test and post-test in the form of essay and they were processed by statistical analysis. It confirms that the use of picture guessing games can improve students’ ability in writing descriptive texts. This is supported by the post-test mean in the experimental class (66.85) is higher than the control class (55.21). Then, the result of t-test shows the calculated value of tcount is 5.20 and ttable on significance level 5% and df = 65 is 1.997. It indicates that tcount is higher than ttable (5.20 > 1.997 = tcount > ttable). Thus, it proves that alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. In other words, there is significant difference between students who were taught by using picture guessing games technique and lecturing teaching technique. The further result shows that the N-gain calculation in experimental class is (0.32), it is in between score 0.30-0.70. It means the N-gain score has “medium” category, and the control class is (0.23), it is in between score 0.00-0.29. It means the N-gain score has “low” category. Thus, it proves that the N-gain in experimental class is higher than the N-gain in control class. In conclusion, teaching descriptive text writing by using picture guessing games technique is more effective than lecturing teaching technique in improving students’ writing ability on descriptive text. The suggestions are that picture guessing games can be implemented in teaching descriptive text writing in order to make teaching and learning activity become effective and fun
