Abstract

Social Climber is a phenomenon of social mobility from a low level to a high level. According to Dirk Wittenborn and Jazz Johnson that the social climber aims to pursue friendship with those with higher social status. From a psychological point of view, social climber is an abnormal behavior because it cannot control its desires. While in terms of mysticism the social climber is a disease of the heart and the disorder of the nafs in which a person has the nature of riya 'and hubbu dunya and the nafs in him tends to be nafs ammarah. The purpose of this study was to determine the social climber conditions among students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung in the perspective of Western Psychology and Sufism. This research is a quantitative study with descriptive statistical analysis techniques. The sample taken was 45 people. From the results of the study, it is known that the social climber students of the Western psychology perspective are included in the medium social climber class of 35.5% and the perspective of Sufism in the very high class is 37.7%. In Sufism the indicators are focused on spirituality, making judgments more stringent. From these results it can be concluded that social climber students are psychologically normal but in terms of spirituality this is bad, so it is recommended that social climber students improve their behavior and lifestyle.
