Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find out the translation strategies used by students of English Department in translating an Indonesian article into English and to measure the translation quality, in terms of naturalness, of translated article. To analyze the strategy, the researcher bases the theory on Newmark that relates to the translation methods and the other translation procedures. Meanwhile, to measure the naturalness quality, the researcher refers to the theory of Larson particularly which connects to the testing of translation. This research utilized mixed method which is continued with the exploratory sequential analysis to conduct the phase of collecting and analyzing data. To obtain the data, the researcher applied observation and instrumentation techniques particularly rating scale. In case of analyzing data, this research involved content analysis and descriptive statistic. The result of analysis shows that the strategies used by the students in translating Indonesian article into English are word for word translation, naturalization, transference, cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, calque/loan/through translation, synonymy, shift or transposition, literal translation, faithful translation, paraphrase, adaptation, free translation, communicative translation, and modulation. The strategy which is commonly used by students in translating process is literal translation because they attempt to preserve the SL context and meaning. Meanwhile, based on the naturalness measurement, the quality of student translation product is mostly categorized into bad level. This implies that the translation still contains unnatural grammar and awkward language. In addition, it is also linguistically unnatural and stylistically awkward.
