Abstract
Dystopian literature has been characterized as fiction that presents a negative view of the future of society and humankind. It serves to warn members of a society to pay attention to their surroundings in which they live and to be aware of how things can go from bad to worse without anyone realizing what has happened. Unwind by Neal Shusterman is a good example of dystopian fiction and reflects dystopian society in its story. The research investigates the characteristics of dystopian society and how the survival theme builds the dystopian formula in Unwind using dystopia theory by Terri Chung. Chung’s theory explains about the definition of dystopia, the characteristics of dystopian society and the types of social control in dystopian society. The theory of narrative elements of popular fiction, dystopian formula, and the importance of conflict in dystopian fiction are added to help the researcher’s analyze. The research use structuralism method to analyze and explore the structures or narrative elements underlying the text. Through analyzing the narrative elements, this research revealed the characteristics of dystopian society in Unwind and the main conflict of the story surrounds the rights of children, the value of their lives in their fight to survive their parents' choice and stay alive as a ‘whole’ person until the age of eighteen. Those conflicts firm up the plot to build the survival theme as the formula of the story, and devolved Unwind into dystopian society.
