Abstract

Speaking is used to express ideas and communicate with others. it means that speaking is important, but the students of senior high school still get hard to be a good speakers. Therefore, teacher is challenged to teach speaking by using good media should help the teacher create a good atmosphere in the class during teaching speaking; it should be assume students enjoy learning speaking without felling forced. The primary aim of this research is to prefer the answer concerning the following questions: “how is the students’ speaking ability by using short stories?” “how is the students speaking ability without using short stories” “how is significance the differences of students’ speaking ability by using short stories and without using short stories?”. This research was conducted at eleventh grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Bandung. Furthermore, the method used in this research is quantitative method with quasi-experimental design meanwhile the samples of the research cover two classes in the eleventh grade. The first class is as the experimental classes consist of 34 students and the second class as the control classes consist of 34 students, the population of this study is 178 students. The instrument of research is oral test. The materials test is about giving opinion and the using of simple past tense. The computation of data analysis uses statistical method with t- test. The result of the data analysis showed that the mean score was obtained by students on posttest both the experimental and control class. Experimental class is 65.26 while the mean score of students in control class is 57.82. The result of computation of t- test is that tcount = 2.661 and ttable = 1.668. In the order words, t count is bigger than t table (t count > t table) and it means there is significance. The conclusion is the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Based on result of the research and analyzing the data, it should be concluded there is significant difference between teaching speaking by using short stories and without using short stories. Therefore, it is the suggested to English teacher to implement this media to improve students’ speaking ability.
