Abstract

Translation is a process of transferring a text from source language into target language. It is not an easy process or activity especially if the text is complicated. Therefore, the translator should have strategies to solve some problems when they were translating. Thus, the researcher is interested in finding the translation strategies used by the respondents in translating particular patterns in the text and to know their levels of difficulty in translating them. As the theoretical basis for analyzing the problems, the researcher used the theory of the translation strategies by Newmark (1988: 81-93). Those are literal, transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivqlent, shift or transposition, modulation, reduction and expansion. The study employs qualitative descriptive method to achieve the purpose. The source of data is ten respondents selected from the fourth semester of English Department students. In collecting the data, the researcher used test to translate particular patterns in the text and questionnaire to know the level of respondents’ difficulties. The results of this research are first, there are 12 translation strategies that used by respondents in translating some particular patterns, those are literal, shift/ transposition, reduction, paraphrase, equivalence, synonymy, transference, modulation, componential analysis, expansion, naturalization, and descriptive equivalent. Second, there are seven level of difficulties that have been choosen by respondents. Those are very easy (VE), easy (E), rather easy (RE), fair (F), rather difficult (RD), difficult (D), and very difficult (VD).
