Abstract
Self-efficacy is inner potential people to make a spontaneous action confidently without any hesitation. Concept of self-efficacy is to make certain about person’s ability in psychological side within their habitual life. In this era, why cannot students speak confidently in the class when teacher ask them? Why do students always point each other rather than they speak naturally? What is students’ self-efficacy? What is their speaking ability? How is the students self-efficacy in speaking? The purposes of this study are: (1) to know the students’ self-efficacy, (2) to find out the students’ speaking ability, and (3) to explore relationships between students’ self-efficacy and speaking ability. This research used quantitative approach with correlational study. It was carried out at the 2nd semester of English Education Department State Islamic University of Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung Academic Year 2016. Sample of this research consisted of 40 students who were selected by used simple random sampling technique. Two instruments were used for data collection: Questionnaire for self-efficacy and Test of Spoken English (TSE) recorded monologue for speaking ability. All measures were created specifically for this study. Major findings in this study include: 1) the average score of students’ self-efficacy is 72.05 in high level criteria, 2) the average score of students’ speaking ability is 71.37 in high criteria, and 3) the correlation between self-efficacy and their speaking ability is 0.498 in adequate correlation criteria. The conclusion of this research is that students’ self-efficacy has adequate correlation with their speaking ability at the 2nd semester students of State Islamic University of Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung Academic Year 2016. The recommendations of this research are: 1) self-efficacy is one of factors that can influence the students speaking ability. Thus, students should believe and have confident more whenever they interact with others in English, 2) the role of teachers is important to improve students’ self-efficacy, because a teacher is the best factor to encourage students when interact with others in English at the school, University, and community surrounding, and 3) for the next researchers, this research can becomes reference to the similar topic of the future research.
