Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing hyperbole in the lyric of Ariana Grade’s songs on the album “Yours Truly”. Hyperbole is such a style that contains an over statement exaggerate things which is often used in literary works such as poem, novel, and song lyric. For analyzing the hyperbole in Ariana Grande’s song lyrics, the researcher uses two question as a research question; 1) What are forms of hyperbole are in the lyric of Ariana Grande’s songs on the album “Yours Truly”? and 2) What are the hyperbolic expressions in the lyric of Ariana Grande’s songs on the album “Yours Truly”? To answer the questions, the researcher uses Claudia Claridge’s theory about forms of hyperbole and hyperbolic expressions. To limit the object, the researcher took the first album from Ariana Grande namely “Yours Truly” album consisting of 12 songs. This research also uses descriptive method and qualitative approach. Those data are collected by identifying, listing, tabulating the data and then analyzed, interpreted, and concluded. The result of this research shows of 12 song lyrics the researcher found 5 types forms of hyperbole, those are 37 lyrics pointed out as single-word hyperbole, 2 lyrics pointed out as numerical hyperbole, 1 lyric pointed out as the role of superlative, 2 lyrics pointed out as comparisons, and 2 lyrics pointed out as repetitions. Besides, from 12 song lyrics the researcher found 3 types of hyperbolic expressions, those are 11 lyrics pointed out as context, 1 lyric pointed out as the problem of literal meaning, and 2 lyrics pointed out as vagueness and hyperbole interpretation.
