Abstract

This research analyzes convention and invention of romance plot in the The Shape of Water movie script by Guillermo Del toro and Vanessa Taylor. The Shape of Water movie script consists of several parts: character, theme, plot, background, and point of view. Those are called an intrinsic elements. A literary work without intrinsic elements cannot stand because these elements are related to each other. One of the intrinsic elements in movie script is plot. The plot is the convention of intrinsic elements in making literary works. The plot in The Shape of Water movie script is certainly experiences development, especially in the storyline, the plot will change and have new innovations or what is called invention. In analyzing convention and invention researcher use the theories of Gustav Freytag and Cawelti. This research is textual research, when movie script are placed as text, the analysis method referred to is structuralism. The technique of analyzing data, first, reading The Shape of Water, movie script, second, quoted the script included in the convention of plot. Next, explain, and describe the text that has been quoted to find out the events that occurred, from this the researcher can find and categorize that the event is included in the convention of plot or not. After finding and analyzing the convention of plot in The Shape of Water movie script, researcher could find the invention in the movie scripts and then provide conclusions from the results of the analysis. The Convention consists of: 1) Exposition. 2) Rising action 3) Climax 4) Falling action 5) Resolution, their love story is happy ending. The invention consist of: 1) woman got attention from man in rising action. 2) their love story between Amphibian Man and mute woman in rising action. 3) the conflict occurs in falling action.
