Abstract

In this research, the writer discusses of the refusal strategies of love between male and female in romance Hollywood movies. The refusal strategies are found in the analysis of the refusal direct and indirect and used language in the refusal. The research was carried out because there were many refusal of love contained in Hollywood romance movies. It was formulated in two research question, namely: 1) How are refusal strategies of love between male and female in Hollywood romance movies? and 2) What are similarities and differences refusal strategies of love between male and female in Hollywood romance movies?. The research examines the refusal strategies and uses language by male and female where refusal strategies be found in theories of linguistics. The writer used theory Holmes and Tannen about language and gender, the theory Lakoff and Coates about language male and female, theory Beebe about refusal, and also other theories to analysis the data and find the refusal strategies. The writer used descriptive qualitative method, namely collected the data which relate to the research, observed and analysis how the refusal strategies of love between male and female and then similarities and differences refusal strategies of love and in the used language in the refusal strategies of love which utterance based on conversation in the movie. In this research found the refusal strategies of love between male and female an adult and teen. Then, refusal strategies of love can doing by male and female analyzed based on strategy, age, and language. Then, it can be seen that the refusal strategies of love which carried by male and female direct and indirect. The result of the research be found 15 data refusal strategies of love from 12 movies namely, 7 data refusal strategies of love between male and female adult, 8 data refusal strategies of love between male and female teen. The writer found similarities and differences refusal strategies of love between male and female an adult and teen. Then, the similarities refusal strategies of love found similarities between male and female adult and then female teen, namely used language politely and used refusal strategies indirect. Then, the differences refusal strategies of love are on a male teen which used language impolitely and used refusal strategies direct.
