Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the important elements in writing. It is a distinctive feature of writing style in selection parts of speech. Collocation is one of phrase buildings to produce correct word combination. In magazines there are many articles with different topics and it contains of vocabulary. In this research, the writer focuses on finding the types of collocation based on the classification and the relation between each meaning. The problems in this research are formulated into two questions, they are: 1. what types of collocation are found in Jakarta Java Kini magazine based on the classification. 2. What is the relation of the meaning between the dominant word and its modifier in each collocation? The analysis is undertaken by using qualitative method by identifying, categorizing, analyzing and interpreting to answer the questions. The data for this study are taken from Jakarta Java Kini magazine which made by Indonesian people. The writer uses Benson et al theory’s (1986) and Oxford Collocation Dictionary to support the theories of collocation based on the statement problems. The result shows that in this magazine the writer finds 115 collocation words with each types of collocation. Based on the classifications there are grammatical and lexical collocation which consists of 58 grammatical collocations divided into four types and there are 57 lexical collocation divided into four types. Moreover the writer analyzes the relation meaning of each collocation, the result shows that in every meaning of each collocation words there is a relation between them which can change the meaning of the dominant word and also as the direction of the head to make the meaning clearer.
