Abstract

This research focuses on describing and analyzing the representation of femininity and female masculinity based on Lady Diana character in BBC1 Panorama Interview Programme. This Interview was guided by Martin Bashir and broadcasted on 21 November 1995. Lady Diana’s Interview Transcription is studied by using the critical theory of Femininity by Beauvoir and female Masculinity by R.W. Connell and Judith Halberstam. Lady Diana was a woman but she had another side of her gender identity. This research uses a descriptive method in Literary Criticism as it did not use qualification or numeral to getting the result. Yet, it uses the data from the text of interview transcription because the content of data is talked about Diana’s marriage, social and individual life. The result of this research, shows that are two categories related to the femininity of Lady Diana, firstly, based on her physical view related to her physical attractiveness, and secondly, based on her mental view related to her situations such as feeling fear, sympathy, weakness, kindness, wary, emotional, complain, careless and the last is hope and imagination. Meanwhile, there are four traits of female masculinity of Lady Diana characters, they are: carrier oriented, independent, rational thinking, and the last is self-confident. Hence, from the data analysis of her interview transcription, Lady Diana shows as femininity and Female masculinity character. It means, even though she was a woman , she had the characteristics of men in facing the problems that occur in her life when she become a Princess of Wales and the character shown by her marriage, individual, and social situation.
