Abstract

This undergraduate thesis discussed cinematic language in Batman: The Dark Knight movie (2008). From the title of this undergraduate thesis, it would be known that the object for this research was Batman: The Dark Knight Movie (2008). In the beginning of the analysis of the object, the writer put several assumptions related to the message of the movie and cinematic language. The writer formulated two research questions in this research. The first was about the irony represented by cinematic language technique. The second was about breaking the rules of cinematic language to send the message of the movie. In this undergraduate thesis, the writer used theories proposed by Boggs and Petrie (2008) and Mercado (2011). The methodology of this research was descriptive qualitative with case study approach. The analysis started with some types of irony which was represented from Boggs and Petrie theory. There were six types of irony namely dramatic irony, irony of situation, irony of character, irony of setting, irony of tone and cosmic irony. Afterwards, the writer analyzed the data with cinematic language technique namely camera placement and camera movement. Camera placement was divided into five types; namely extreme close-up, close-up, medium shot, long shot and extreme long shot. Camera movement technique for analyzing the data was also divided into several types namely bird’s eye angle, high angle, eye level angle, low angle and canted angle. The results of this research showed that irony and breaking the rules of shots could identify the message of the movie. The technique by the filmmaker could send the message of the movie to all of the spectators. As a result, the irony of the movie might send contradictory message to the spectators. The irony and cinematic language of the movie also gave us comprehension about all of the information in detail.
