Abstract

Language is the important tool for all societies of human beings. Human needs language to communicate, to interact and to get information. Language is not only use in daily communication but also exist in a song, there are many sentences with figurative languages elements inside, such as metaphor. To know the meaning of metaphor needed the theory. Based on the background of this research, the writer has two questions in this research 1) what types of metaphor use in Green Day song? 2) What is the meaning of each metaphor used in Green Day songs? The writer use qualitative method to analyze the data. The research questions will be answered in analytical description. To analyze the data, the writer has been identified then analyzed based on Lakoff and Johnson's concept of targets and sources. The finding is the writer found 70 metaphors from three types of metaphor in Green Day song lyrics. Those are 6% structural metaphor, 48% orientational metaphor, and 45% ontological metaphor.
