Abstract
In conversation, both speaker and listener have their own role. The speaker sends the message and listener receives it. As the active listeners, they can show kind of short response. This response, do not make the speaker stops to talk in contrary, it makes the speaker to continue. This kind of phenomenon is what Yngve called as backchannel. It can communicate as verbal on non-verbal. This research is about the analysis of backchannel in the Ellen Degeneres’s talk show. There are two research questions in this research are: (1) what are the meaning and function of verbal backchannel’s form in the Ellen’s show? (2) what are the meaning and function of non-verbal backchannel’s form in the Ellen’s show?. There are nine forms of verbal backchannel that is collected some experts. The researcher also found four forms of non-verbal backchannel. This research used the descriptive qualitative method to solve the problem. The researcher watched the video then, wrote some backchannels that is appeared in the video. In the end, the researcher analyzed it based on its meaning and function. As the result, the researcher found some of backchannel’s form that appeared in the talk show. The researcher found eight forms of verbal backchannel and four non-verbal backchannel’s form. The verbal backchannel’s form that appear from the talk show are uh-huh, hmm, yes, yeah, true, right, beautiful, exactly, so sweet, live show, good for you, thank you, yes I was, I know, it happened, that’s right, that’s true, that’s great, So you did it, could him?, you did?, you are?, ow, oh no, oh wow, oh yeah, oh my God. There is also repetition like New York and In Spanish. In non-verbal forms as head nod, eye gaze, raise eyebrow, smile and laugh. There are different functions of those backchannel. The function as agreement can be form as: uh-huh, yes, yeah, true, right, exactly, yes I was, that’s right, that’s true, that’s great, and head nods. The function as continuer can be form as hmm, ow and head nods. The function to express the surprising, excitement, admiration can form as beautiful, so sweet, oh no, oh wow, oh yeah, oh my God. While it happened, you did it, could him?, you did?, you are. ? It marks the acceptance and engagement response tokens.
