Abstract

Human has been created by God with each own personality. The personality which people have is influenced by their characteristic, behavior, action, attitude, and mind stream. The psychopathic disorder is one of the human personalities that is always considered dangerous and detrimental for the public since a long time ago. This personality does not only appear in the reality, but also exists in the world of literature, especially a novel. In this research, the researcher is interested in a novel entitled The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. The researcher submits two research questions to discuss and to limit the problem. First, how does the character structure of Mal’akh as the main antagonist character in Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol? Second, how does the psychopath of Mal’akh in Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol? This research uses the psychopath theory by Hervey Cleckley and sharpened by the psychopath theory by Robert Hare. For analyzing the psychopathic disorder of the main character’s personality, the researcher uses the psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud as the grand theory. The result of the analysis shows that; 1.) There are saveral characters reflected in Mal’akh: careful, wary, disguiser, liar, clever, sly, smart, sadist, curiosity, arrogant, ambitious, vengeful, rebellious, impolite, stubborn, and bad emphaty. 2.) Mal’akh as the main antagonist character has some psychopath characteristics which can be seen from his behavior such as liar, lack of remorse and shame, and egocentric. Then, it can be seen from his action such as murder, assault, and rape.
