Abstract

The focus in this research is to oppose natural symbols in two different poems, English and Indonesian poetry. This research is designed to describe 1.) What symbols of nature are found in this study 2.) How is the comparative symbols of nature in this study. This study uses a comparative literary theory by Sussan Bassnet and Sapardi Djoko Damono. This research compares literary works from two different countries, different languages, and also different cultures such as what was produced by Sussan Bassnet in his theory. This research is also supported by Sapardi's theory which says that comparative literary studies can be studied by other theories. Therefore, the rationale in this research is focused on symbols that use Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method and literary criticism method where the results of this study do not produce numbers or images. This research produces a difference between literary works in the form of English and Indonesian poetry. The results in this discussion produce a different perspective, as in Shelley's poem considers the symbol of nature as a creature or god who has power and improves life, while in the poem K.H. Mustofa Bisri considered the symbol of nature that poets always used to express sadness was futile. The two poems have different perspectives in natural symbols, but both poems have a form of caring in responding to the surrounding environment. What has not been done in this research is what is done between the text and other science studies.
