Abstract

A metaphor is one of figurative language which is the expression of an understanding of one concept is in term of another concept. Specifically, metaphor is comparison two very unlike things to display an important quality that has in common. In this case, the problem of the research are 1) What are the word functions and classes of original metaphor in seven death-themed songs lyrics, and 2) What are the contextual meanings of original metaphor in seven death-themed songs lyrics. To answer those problems, the researcher used descriptive qualitatif method and to analyze the data the researcher used the theory proposed by (Newmark, 1998). Based on the data analysis the findings show that the word function is dominated by complement (36 data). The other ones are found predicate (12 data), subject (5 data), adverb (3 data), and object (2 data). Meanwhile the word class is dominated by noun (30 data). The other ones are found verb (12 data), adjective (13 data), and adverb (3 data). Furthermore, the contextual meanings are all indicating depression and frustation. From the findings of data analysis, it can be concluded that word function of complemet that dominates orignal metaphor, describes the situation and condition experienced by the subject and word class of noun dominates original metaphor as the complement is always occupied by the word class of noun and adjectives. Meanwhile, the contextual meaning can be said that someone whose condition is in a state of depression and stress, who listens to one of the seven death-themed songs, could be even more depressed and lead to death
