Abstract

INDONESIA Skripsi ini membahas tentang konflik batin tokoh Mitch dalam novel The Firm melalui pendekatan psikologi sastra. Pendekatan ini merupakan salah satu pendekatan dalam sastra yang mengkaji tentang kejiwaan tokoh. Analisis terhadap novel the firm dengan menggunakan pendekatan psikologi sastra khususnya teori Sigmund Freud mengenai core issues, defense dan axiety. Skripsi ini mempunyai dua pertanyaan masalah, yaitu: bagaimana tokoh utama mengalami konflik batin dalam novel The Firm karya John Grisham? Dan bagaimana konflik batin membangun formula thriller dalam novel The Firm karya John Grisham? Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk menngetahui konflik batin yang dialami oleh tokoh utama dalam novel The Firm karya John Grisham dan untuk mengetahui bagaimana konflik batin bisa membangun formula thriller dalam novel The Firm karya John Grisham. Untuk menjawab pertanyaan itu, penulis memakai pendekatan psikologi sastra dan formula thriller. Sedangkan teori yang akan dipakai dalam skripsi ini adalah core issues, defense dan anxiety. Hasilnya, penulis menemukan dua jawaban dasar untuk pertanyaan ini, yaitu:1). Tokoh utama mengalami konflik batin karena mempunyai masalah yang sangat besar sehingga menimbulkan kecemasan, akan tetapi masalah ini bisa diatasi oleh impuls pertahanan yang ada dalam dirinya sehingga konflik batin bisa selalu diatasi dengan baik 2). Konflik batin membangun formula thriller dengan menjadikan plot dalam novel semakin menegangkan, karena pada dasarnya formula thriller itu adalah tentang konflik yang menegangkan dan membuat pembaca semakin penasaran. Hanya saja dari empat formula yang ada dalam thiller, hanya ada tiga yang berhubungan dengan konflik batin. Yaitu, complex characterization, confrontation dan careening. ENGLISH This research discusses the inner conflict Mitch character in the novel The Firm through a psychological of literature approach. This approach is one of the approaches in the literature that examines the psychological figure. Analysis on The Firm by using a psychology of literature approach, especially the theory of Sigmund Freud on core issues, defense and anxiety. This research has two research problems, they are: what does the experience of inner conflict on main character in John Grisham’s The Firm novel? And how the thriller formula is built by inner conflict in John Grisham’s The Firm? The purposes of this research are to analyze inner conflict experienced by the main character of John Grisham’s The Firm and to know how the inner conflict can built thriller formula in John Grisham’s The Firm. To answer these questions, the researcher used psychoanalysis of literary criticism approach and thriller formula. While the theories used in this research are core issues, defense and anxiety. As the result, the researcher found two basic answers to these questions, such as: 1). The main character experiencing inner conflict because he has a very big problem, causing anxiety, but this problem can be solved by the impulse of defense that was in him so that the inner conflict can always be overcome with good 2). Inner conflict build a thriller formula with makes a plot in the novel is getting tense, because basically thriller formula is it about the tense standoff that make the reader more curious. But from four existing formula in a thriller, there are only three that relate to inner conflict. They are, complex characterization, confrontation and Careening.
