Abstract

This research analyzed the linguistic sign and contextual meaning of the English translation of Surah Ar-Rahman by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. Many people are not grateful for what they have, with the Surah Ar-Rahman one can find out the abundant pleasures that God has given to his servants. Therefore, the researcher analyzed the Surah Ar-Rahman through its signifier, signified and contextual meaning. The theory used in this research is the theory of Ferdinand de Saussure, to determine signifier and signified. The method used is descriptive qualitative to identify the sign, to find out the concept, and to analyzed contextual meaning of Surah Ar-Rahman. The data source was taken from the website of the English translation of Surah Ar-Rahman by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. The data collection technique used is the study of documentation. The collected data were then analyzed by organizing, reducing, and representing the data. The results of this research show that there is only one data (verse 58) that produces one characteristic (signifier) of Allah (as the governor). However, 47 verses do not only have one signifier of Allah but also have more than one signifier. Besides that, the entire data was found to have a contextual meaning and Tafsir Ibn Kathir. Therefore, the conclusion of this research that is someone should be grateful for what he has, and all creatures that Allah created deserve to obey all his commands, because whatever happens is all at his will.
